WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:03.640
Hi everyone and welcome to another crochet tutorial

00:03.640 --> 00:08.939
Today we're going to be making this cozy, easy
to crochet sweater perfect for all day wear

00:08.939 --> 00:13.199
This sweater is perfect for beginners and
the written pattern is available in all sizes

00:13.199 --> 00:17.000
I will be making this sweater in size medium,
but don't forget to check out the free written

00:17.000 --> 00:23.680
pattern with all the other sizes in the link below. For this project,
we'll only be using basic crochet stitches, so if you're a beginner

00:23.680 --> 00:30.760
this is a great project to start off with. For this pattern, I'm
using a really soft and shiny acrylic yarn by Big Twist Shine

00:30.760 --> 00:38.200
in the color coral. I'm using a bigger hook size for
this project and 6mm, which will give it a looser finish

00:38.200 --> 00:42.279
And you'll also need some stitch markers, a
tapestry needle, as well as your tape measure

00:42.279 --> 00:48.520
and a pair of scissors. To start our pattern, you'll need
to gather your size and work the number of chains you

00:48.520 --> 00:57.560
will need for the front and back panel as one piece. I will be
making 260 chains for size medium, so go ahead and work a slip knot

00:57.560 --> 01:05.639
You'll yarn over and drop a loop. Yarn
over and drop a loop to start your chains

01:05.639 --> 01:12.080
Once you've completed all your chains, you
should have a really, really long set of chains

01:12.080 --> 01:18.120
Now to start the next row,
you'll need to chain once more

01:18.120 --> 01:23.199
And for the next row, you'll yarn over, insert
your hook into the second chain from your

01:23.199 --> 01:28.800
hook, you'll drop a loop, you should have
3 loops on your hook, you'll yarn over and

01:28.800 --> 01:33.559
pull through all loops. This would be
your first half double crochet stitch

01:33.559 --> 01:41.160
Now you'll be working half double crochet
stitches into each chain all the way across

01:41.160 --> 01:56.919
On your last stitch, you'll work your last
half double crochet stitch, and you'll chain 1

01:56.919 --> 02:03.319
This turning chain is not considered a stitch. For
the next row, I want to create a knit-like stitch row

02:03.319 --> 02:07.519
And as you can see here at the top, this is
where we would normally insert our hook, but

02:07.599 --> 02:12.800
To create the knit-like effect, you will need
to go through the third loop, which is this

02:12.800 --> 02:20.639
horizontal line here at the bottom of the stitch. This will
be considered your half double crochet through the third loop

02:20.639 --> 02:25.800
Now in order to do that, we'll yarn over,
you'll insert your hook through that bottom

02:25.800 --> 02:38.000
horizontal loop, you'll drop a loop,
yarn over and pull through all loops

02:38.000 --> 02:43.919
And this will be considered your half
double crochet through the third loop

02:43.919 --> 02:50.080
Now we'll be working this stitch into every
third loop all the way across, and I'll meet

02:50.080 --> 03:03.080
you back here once we're done

03:03.080 --> 03:07.399
On your last stitch, you'll just work the
half double crochet through the third loop

03:07.399 --> 03:15.600
as usual, and you'll chain 1 and turn your work. On the right side,
you should be able to see the knit-like row that you just made

03:15.600 --> 03:23.039
It looks almost like a row of chains. If you notice
your rows beginning to curl, that is as expected

03:23.039 --> 03:30.360
Now to start the next row, you'll want these
two loops to be the chain stitch at the front

03:30.360 --> 03:35.720
In order to do that, you'll be working a half
double crochet stitch only through the back

03:35.720 --> 03:44.520
loops of each stitch. You'll yarn over, insert your hook
only through the back of the loop, you'll drop a loop

03:44.520 --> 03:54.080
yarn over and pull through all loops. And by working through the
back loops of each stitch, you're actually pushing the V-shaped

03:54.080 --> 04:01.679
stitches to the front, making it a prominent
knit-like stitch that we're aiming for

04:01.679 --> 04:12.399
Now go ahead and work this back loop half
double crochet stitch all the way across

04:12.399 --> 04:17.000
Once you've completed the third row, you
should have a pattern sequence like this

04:17.760 --> 04:26.399
You will be repeating rows 2 and 3, which is a half double crochet through the third loop
and back loop half double crochet stitch, for a total of half the width you are planning

04:26.399 --> 04:34.079
to make. I will be making a total of 28 rows for size
medium and will come back to work on the neckline split

04:34.079 --> 04:40.079
So I've just completed all my 28 rows and
as you can see, the pretty knit-like stitch

04:40.079 --> 04:49.119
pattern across the entire body panel. Yes, you will have a very
long body panel and it will curl a little bit along the edges

04:49.119 --> 04:57.279
and that's fine. Now you'll place a stitch marker
in the middle of the entire body panel's length

04:57.279 --> 05:03.000
Next you'll measure the length of your neckline,
mine is 7.5 inches or 19 cm and place a stitch

05:03.000 --> 05:12.399
marker on both ends. You'll fold your work in half and
from your last stitch, you'll work the next row all

05:12.399 --> 05:18.519
the way across until the stitch marker and then
we'll be working the same number of chains

05:18.519 --> 05:24.100
as the entire length of the neckline
and join through the third stitch marker

05:24.100 --> 05:29.640
So depending where you left off, here I'll
be working through the third loop, so I'll

05:29.640 --> 05:34.100
be working my half double crochet through
the third loop on this row all the way across

05:34.100 --> 05:45.619
until the stitch marker

05:45.619 --> 05:50.940
Once you've worked all the way up to the stitch
marker, you'll now be working the same number

05:50.940 --> 05:57.820
of chains as you have here on the first stitch
marker and through the second stitch marker

05:57.820 --> 06:07.619
Here I have a total of 49 stitches,
so I'll be working 49 chains

06:07.619 --> 06:12.540
Once you've completed all your chains, you'll
continue working your half double crochet

06:12.540 --> 06:28.540
through the third loop into the
stitch after the third stitch marker

06:28.540 --> 06:32.859
So here I'll just continue working my half
double crochet through the third loop all

06:32.859 --> 06:38.459
the way across and I'll also be working my
way all the way back up until I'm back at

06:38.459 --> 06:42.760
the chain row and I'll meet
you back here once we're there

06:42.760 --> 06:49.739
So here I'm at the chain row. Instead of working your back
loop half double crochet stitch, you'll just work a regular

06:49.739 --> 06:58.619
half double crochet stitch into each chain. And once you've completed
all the chain row, you'll work your half double crochet back

06:58.619 --> 07:03.339
loop stitch all the way across and you'll
continue working the remaining number of rows

07:03.339 --> 07:08.179
as you did on the left side
to finish up the right side

07:08.179 --> 07:14.380
And once you're done, just bind off and you
should have a really long rectangular piece

07:14.380 --> 07:22.260
that looks like this with a slit in the middle.
Now let's go ahead and work on the sleeves

07:22.260 --> 07:32.459
You'll work your slip knot and work 33 chains

07:32.459 --> 07:38.220
Once you've completed all your chains,
you'll chain once more to start the next row

07:38.220 --> 07:43.040
We'll be working a half double crochet
stitch into the second chain from your hook

07:43.040 --> 07:48.260
So you'll yarn over, insert your hook, drop
a loop, yarn over and pull through all loops

07:48.260 --> 07:52.459
This will be your first half double crochet
stitch and you'll be working a half double

07:52.459 --> 07:58.859
crochet stitch all the way across. For the sleeves, we'll be
working the same pattern as we did on the body panel, which

07:58.859 --> 08:03.739
will be half double crochet through the
third loop as well as through the back loop

08:03.739 --> 08:09.779
So I'll be working a total of 34 rows
for size medium to complete the sleeves

08:09.779 --> 08:13.660
Once you've completed all your
rows, do not bind off just yet

08:13.660 --> 08:19.839
You'll pick up your working yarn and we'll
be working on the cuffs along the row side

08:19.839 --> 08:26.459
So from our last stitch, you'll
chain one and turn to the row side

08:26.459 --> 08:35.780
To that first row, you'll work a very loose single crochet. Here's a pro
tip, if you're not sure where exactly to insert your hook, just insert your

08:35.780 --> 08:42.659
hook as far as a single crochet stitch should
be while ensuring that your stitches are not

08:42.659 --> 08:54.219
too tight. For this row, you would need
to have loose single crochet stitches

08:54.219 --> 09:09.460
Now once you've completed all your
rows, you'll chain 10 to start the cuffs

09:09.460 --> 09:16.239
Now I'll turn my work and I'll chain
once more to start on the cuffs row

09:16.239 --> 09:24.400
For the first row, I'll be working single crochet stitches. So go
ahead and insert your hook into the second chain from your hook

09:24.400 --> 09:30.559
You'll drop a loop, yarn over and pull through two
loops. That will be your first single crochet stitch

09:30.559 --> 09:41.440
You'll continue working 10 single
crochet stitches all the way across

09:41.440 --> 09:49.599
Once you've reached that last stitch, you'll
work two slip stitches onto the sleeves row

09:49.599 --> 10:02.039
like so. Then you'll turn your work in one direction,
preferably clockwise, without making a chain

10:02.039 --> 10:09.479
This will ensure that you have an even edge every time.
You'll skip two of the slip stitches that you made earlier

10:09.479 --> 10:18.840
You'll work a back loop single crochet
stitch into each of the stitch across

10:18.840 --> 10:24.719
Once you've reached the top of that stitch,
you'll chain one, turn your work clockwise

10:24.719 --> 10:32.719
like before. You'll insert your hook into that first
stitch through the back loop and work 10 single crochets

10:32.719 --> 10:47.200
all the way down. We'll just be repeating
the first and second row all the way across

10:47.200 --> 10:53.080
Once you've completed all your cuffs, you
should have a complete sleeve just like this

10:53.080 --> 10:59.039
Now we'll be seaming the sides together. This is
the front side where the knit-like stitches are

10:59.039 --> 11:18.679
We'll be folding the sleeves wrong side out. Now we'll align the sides
together and it's always best to secure the sides with stitch markers

11:18.679 --> 11:25.000
Now from the last stitch that we worked on,
if you do not end your last row at the bottom

11:25.000 --> 11:37.159
of the cuffs, just bind off and drop a loop. But if your last
stitch is at the bottom of the cuff, you'll just pick up that loop

11:37.159 --> 11:45.260
like so, adjust the cuffs together and you'll
insert your hook into both pieces through

11:45.260 --> 11:57.320
the first stitch and you'll work that single crochet

11:57.320 --> 12:04.559
So continue to single crochet both pieces
together through each stitch all the way across

12:04.559 --> 12:15.940
and bind off

12:15.940 --> 12:22.080
And once you've completed your sleeves, just
turn your sleeves right side out and go ahead

12:22.080 --> 12:31.799
and make a second sleeve. Now place the body panel wrong
side out and measure 7.5 inches or 19 centimeters from

12:31.799 --> 12:38.000
the fold down. You'll place a stitch marker to mark
that spot as well as along the sides to secure

12:38.000 --> 12:50.080
both pieces together. Now you'll turn your work to
the side and we'll be seaming the sides together

12:50.080 --> 12:55.559
Now go ahead and take your yarn and you'll
insert your hook at the bottom of the body

12:55.559 --> 13:06.760
panel through the first stitch of both pieces.
You'll drop a loop, chain one to secure

13:06.760 --> 13:12.559
Now you'll just go ahead and single crochet
each stitch of both pieces together all the

13:12.559 --> 13:18.919
way across until you've reached the stitch marker
at the underarm. Do not bind off once you're there

13:18.919 --> 13:23.320
Once you've already seamed up the sides, you'll
take your sleeve and making sure that the

13:23.320 --> 13:32.719
sleeve is right side out and the
fold is parallel to the seam side

13:32.719 --> 13:38.919
Now you'll slip the sleeve's armhole side
through the body panel with the cuffs facing

13:38.919 --> 13:54.119
the neckline. Next you want to place stitch markers
along the corner of each side of the underarm attached

13:54.119 --> 14:09.320
to the sleeve

14:09.320 --> 14:14.599
Now we'll pick up the stitch from when we
were working on the side and you'll now hold

14:14.599 --> 14:21.760
onto the sleeve and the underarm and work
single crochet stitches on both pieces all

14:21.760 --> 14:31.080
the way in a round

14:31.080 --> 14:36.239
And once you've worked your way all the way
in a round, you'll just work one slip stitch

14:36.239 --> 14:53.219
into that first stitch that you made along the
armhole. So chain one to secure and bind off

14:53.219 --> 14:57.820
Now that you've completed one side of the
sleeve, go ahead and work on the other side

14:57.820 --> 15:03.280
of the body panel by seaming up the
sides and joining up the sleeves

15:03.280 --> 15:10.659
Now let's work on the collar. You'll arrange the body panel
right side up and insert your hook into that fifth stitch

15:11.020 --> 15:21.900
from the bottom of the neckline on
the right side and you'll drop a loop

15:21.900 --> 15:32.960
You'll chain one to secure. Now you'll work five half double
crochet stitches while carrying along that excess tail along

15:32.960 --> 15:54.359
the neckline

15:54.359 --> 16:03.080
Next you'll skip the middle row and work two
slip stitches onto the left side of the neckline

16:03.080 --> 16:12.960
You'll turn your work in one direction, preferably clockwise

16:12.960 --> 16:19.679
Now you'll skip the two slip stitches that
you made earlier and you'll work a back loop

16:19.679 --> 16:38.359
half double crochet stitch onto that first
stitch and throughout the next four stitches

16:38.359 --> 16:42.559
You'll chain one. You'll turn your
work again in the same direction

16:42.559 --> 16:57.080
On the next row, you'll work a back loop
half double crochet into each stitch

16:57.080 --> 17:01.919
and once you've reached the bottom of the
neckline, you'll skip one stitch and work

17:01.919 --> 17:19.119
two slip stitches again on the
neckline and you'll turn your work

17:19.119 --> 17:24.280
You'll skip the two slip stitches that you
made earlier and continue working the back

17:24.280 --> 17:41.079
loop half double crochet stitches into each stitch. So from here you're
basically repeating the last two rows all the way across in the round

17:41.079 --> 17:46.000
Now go ahead and work on this row and I'll
meet you back here once you're at the center

17:46.000 --> 17:53.400
back of the body panel. Once you've worked your way through
the center back of the neckline, you'll see this middle

17:53.400 --> 18:00.760
row here which you'll just treat as a regular
stitch row and you'll work the collar as usual

18:00.760 --> 18:10.880
So here I'll be working my stitches along
the collar and once I've reached that middle

18:10.880 --> 18:22.160
row I will skip that row and work my slip
stitch into the next stitch as usual

18:22.160 --> 18:27.119
So from here you'll just continue working
on the collar along the neckline and I'll

18:27.119 --> 18:31.479
meet you back here once you're
back at the front of the collar

18:31.479 --> 18:37.599
I've just completed working on the collar all
the way to the front until that last visible

18:37.599 --> 18:44.079
stitch as you can see here which is basically
on top of that first row of the collar that

18:44.079 --> 18:51.760
we made earlier. Now in order for us to complete the
collar, we'll be working two more rows on the first

18:51.760 --> 19:09.760
row of the collar. So go ahead and continue working
on the collar, here I'll be working my five stitches

19:09.760 --> 19:15.640
Now once I've completed all five stitches, I'll
skip the first stitch of the five stitches

19:15.640 --> 19:24.520
on the collar and I'll insert my hook into
that second stitch of the collar and I'll

19:24.520 --> 19:36.920
work a slip stitch and again
into that third stitch and work

19:36.920 --> 19:46.599
a slip stitch. I'll turn my work, I'll skip the
two slip stitches and work my five stitches all the

19:46.599 --> 19:59.119
way up and I'll work my five stitches back down. Once you've completed
that last row just go ahead and work that two slip stitches on the

19:59.119 --> 20:10.959
bottom of the first row, chain one and
leave a long tail for seaming the sides

20:10.959 --> 20:16.400
So now you can see you have a flap at the
front of the collar, you'll just fold it in

20:16.400 --> 20:23.640
front of the left side, go ahead and place
a stitch marker to secure the right collar

20:23.640 --> 20:29.760
Now I've already thread my tapestry needle
and I'll just sew the sides with a simple

20:29.760 --> 21:00.640
whip stitch. And once you're at the top of the
row, just go ahead and weave in the excess tail

21:06.640 --> 21:10.640
Now the last thing we need to do
is to work on the bottom edging

21:10.640 --> 21:15.640
We'll turn our work bottom side
up and facing the right side

21:15.640 --> 21:27.640
Here I'm working along the seams. I'll insert my hook and
I'll drop a loop, I'll chain one to secure, I'll chain five

21:33.640 --> 21:43.640
I'll chain once more to start the next row. Now, into the second
chain from my hook I'll work a half double crochet and four more half

21:43.640 --> 22:12.640
double crochets along the chain. And just like how we worked on
the collar, we'll skip one row, we'll work two slip stitches

22:13.640 --> 22:22.640
I'll turn my work clockwise, I'll skip that
previous two slip stitches, and I'll work

22:22.640 --> 22:35.640
a half double crochet through the back loop on each
stitch. I'll chain one, I'll turn my work clockwise

22:42.640 --> 22:55.640
I'll skip one row and I'll
work two slip stitches

23:00.640 --> 23:06.640
I'll turn my work clockwise and I'll just
repeat row two and three all the way in around

23:06.640 --> 23:11.640
So go ahead and work on the bottom edging
and I'll meet you back here once we're done

23:13.640 --> 23:23.640
On your last row, just make sure that your
last stitch is exactly next to the first row

23:23.640 --> 23:32.640
without any gaps. Now you'll fold the bottom edging
wrong side out and sandwich them together like this

23:32.640 --> 23:48.640
And you'll insert your hook through the back
loops of both rows and work a slip stitch

23:48.640 --> 23:56.640
So basically you're working on the
inner loops of the front and back stitch

24:03.640 --> 24:19.640
And once you've completed all your slip
stitches, chain one to secure and bind off

24:19.640 --> 24:28.640
And there you have it, your knit-like crochet sweater. By focusing on basic
stitches, simple construction, and positive ease, this pattern ensures success

24:28.640 --> 24:34.640
for first time crocheters. I hope this tutorial was
helpful and if it was, please do give me a thumbs up

24:34.640 --> 24:40.640
and subscribe to my channel if you haven't done so yet.
Happy crocheting and I'll see you soon. Bye for now
